March is Brain Injury Awareness Month

In New Zealand, approximately 36,000 traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and 11,000 strokes are reported each year. At ABI, we’re dedicated to supporting individuals living with concussion, mild, moderate, and severe TBI.

Today, we’re focusing on Concussion — a type of mild TBI caused by a bump, jolt, or blow to the head that causes the brain to move rapidly. This movement can result in chemical changes and damaged brain cells, though these changes often don’t show up on x-rays or scans.

Key Concussion Facts:
* A concussion can occur from any impact to the body that causes the head to shake, not just a direct blow to the head.
* You don’t need to lose consciousness to experience a concussion.
* A previous concussion increases the risk of another, with recovery taking longer for each subsequent injury.

Rehabilitation Support:
Early intervention and education are crucial for recovery. While most people recover within weeks, some may need longer and more specialized care. At ABI, we provide an interdisciplinary concussion rehabilitation program with specialists including Occupational Therapists, Neuro-physiotherapists, Neuropsychologists, and Medical Experts. We help our kiritaki (clients) return to work, education, sports, and other key activities as soon as possible.
